Transport an Oversized Load

How to Successfully Transport an Oversized Load

When you consider all the implications of moving an oversized load, you’ll realize the importance of using a specialized service to make it happen.

Oversized loads are those that exceed:

  • The size and/or weight limits of roads, highways, and air or sea transport modes.
  • The limits of the vehicles used to transport the load. For example, per axle limits on trucks.

The many requirements for transporting oversized loads include:

  • Signage and signalling: The extremities (front, back and sides, depending on the actual shape of the cargo) of the load must be marked, during the day with flags and/or signs and with flashing lights at night.

The oversize demarcation requirements can differ from country to country, state to state and province to province. For example, in Canada and the USA, both countries require “Oversize Load” signs be placed at the front and back of the vehicle. But in Canada, the signs feature red and white vertical stripes and in the USA the signs are yellow with a black border.

  • Escort Vehicle(s): Sometimes called Pilot Cars, escort vehicles are used when the load exceeds the physical dimensions; height, length, width; allowed on the roads or highways it is transported on.

One or more escort vehicles are used in front and/or behind the loaded vehicle to warn other drivers about the oversize load and also to keep the driver of the oversize transport informed of obstacle on the road, like low bridge clearances.

These are just two of the many requirements and considerations for transporting an oversize load.  From properly preparing the cargo for shipment to making sure it is safely unloaded, each step is crucial for successful delivery and to avoid costly delays and damage, to the load or the transportation infrastructure and vehicles it travels on.

That’s why it’s critical to use an experienced specialist to transport your oversize shipment.
